Dedication of Trail in Tuscany in Memory of Francesco Greco

September 13, 2020

CAI-Pisa and CAI-PNW will be joining together to see that trail 181 near Pizzo d’Uccello in the Garfagnana (north of Lucca and Pisa) is dedicated to the memory of Francesco Greco who was instrumental in founding CAI-PNW.  CAI-Pisa will work on improving and signposting the trail, which includes replacing the worn steel cables with galvanized steel chain.  They will carry out the work in May and June 2020.  Funds from CAI-PNW along with funds from the Francesco Greco Memorial Fund will help with covering some of the expenses of this work.  If you would like to contribute to this Memorial Fund, which is also to support a mountaineering/cultural exchange of young Italian and young Pacific Northwest mountaineers, you may make a check out to CAI-PNW, noting it is for the Francesco Greco Memorial Fund. Send your check to:  George Whyel, 9525 Lake Washington Blvd NE, Bellevue, WA 98004.

This special dedication or inauguration of the trail is set for Sunday, September 13, 2020.  Hikers will assemble at Rifugio Donegani with some hikers going to Foce Siggioli, then Foce di Giovo, where sign posts with plaques bearing the name of Francesco will be placed.  Other hikers wanting a shorter hike will only go to Foce di Giovo.  Some hikers might also go to the top of Pizzo d’Uccello.  These are hikes number 6 and number 13 in Francesco’s book, “The Alps of Tuscany”.

In addition to hiking and the trail dedication on September 13, 2020, hikes will be planned for September 11 and 12 in the Apuan Alps and on September 14 and 15 in the Mt. Pisano area near Pisa.  We plan to have moderate hikes and easy walks. If you are interested in attending the September 13 event and/or any of the hikes or walks before or after, please contact Beverly Riter at
